NY VOTE

Our Platform

Who is NY VOTE?

We are a coalition of community groups & labor unions organizing in communities across New York City. We believe in mobilizing our communities’ voting power to support progressive policies that benefit low-income communities, communities of color, and workers. We believe in using our collective power to hold politicians accountable to our priority issues. We believe our city can and must reflect our values to share the wealth, respect its workers, and promote fairness and equality.

NY VOTE is Make The Road By Walking, Families United for Racial and Economic Equality, The Latin American Integration Center, Mothers On the Move, The New York City Aids Housing Network, The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, The New York Civic Participation Project, NY Jobs With Justice, The United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1500, The Professional Staff Congress at CUNY & the Transport Workers Union Local 100.

What do we stand for?

  1. We believe our communities should have economic opportunity!
  2. We believe in equal opportunity, equal schools, & equal access to public services and affordable, healthy housing!
  3. We believe all workers should be treated with dignity and respect!
  4. We believe that all New Yorkers should have access to health care!
  5. We believe our government must protect and promote the civil rights of all New Yorkers!

Our progressive solutions:

1. We believe our communities should have economic opportunity!

  • We support economic development that results in living & prevailing wage jobs, local hiring, training & apprenticeship opportunities, and union jobs.
  • We support access to education, training, and income support for people receiving public assistance so that they have the opportunity to exit poverty.
  • We support economic development that meets community needs like schools, parks, affordable housing, and childcare.
  • We believe community benefits agreements should be required for all developments & companies that receive public money.

2. We believe in equal opportunity, equal schools, & equal access to public services and affordable, healthy housing!

  • We believe that all public services (welfare centers, schools, hospitals, and other government agencies) should have adequate translation services accessible to all NY residents.
  • We support increased state & local funding to improve our schools and public colleges.
  • We believe that CUNY should remain open to and affordable for all New Yorkers.
  • We believe that everyone should live in healthy housing without any housing code violations.
  • We support city, state and federal investments to create 100,000 truly affordable housing units and supportive housing for people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City.
  • We support increased funding to meet the overwhelming demand for regulated child care regardless of age and ensure that single parents have access to subsidized childcare.

3. We believe all workers should be treated with dignity and respect!

  • We support a guarantee that employers pay prevailing wages in all publicly financed projects.
  • We support increased apprenticeship opportunities for people of color and women.
  • We believe that all New York workers have the right to organize for higher wages, job security, job safety and healthcare.
  • We believe that businesses must pay at least New York State’s minimum wage, and it would be better if they paid high enough to lift families out of poverty and into opportunity.

4. We believe that all NYers should have access to health care!

  • We believe that New Yorkers in the prison system should have access to quality healthcare, including HIV and HCV prevention.
  • We believe employers need to provide quality healthcare to all their workers.

5. We believe our government must protect and promote the civil rights of all NYers!

  • We believe a person should not be asked about their immigration status by city officials or agencies and a person’s immigration status should not be shared with the federal government.
  • We support comprehensive immigration reform allowing hard working immigrants in our country a path to legalization.
  • We believe people should have access to driver’s licenses regardless of immigration status and that New York State should not enroll in the federal Real ID program which requires legal immigration status for driver’s licenses.
  • We support expanding the right to vote to New Yorkers in prison upon discharge.
  • We support creating a public relations campaign that educates all New Yorkers, including formerly incarcerated individuals, about their right to vote.
